Series background & context
Ever After takes fairy tale shapes and drops them into modern romance. The books are contemporary, but the setup is full of sleeping beauty moments, prince charming energy, wicked stepmother problems, and a general sense that love is messier than the storybook version.
Smith keeps the tone warm and very readable. Lawyers, business owners, single parents, runaway daughters, fake engagements, travel mishaps, and Christmas settings all get folded into the romances. The heroes are polished on the outside, but usually less sure of themselves once real feelings arrive.
The series works best if you want something lighter than her darker books, while still keeping strong chemistry and emotional stakes. It has the fairy tale gloss, but the people inside the stories still have jobs, baggage, and bad timing to work through.
