Erin Beaty Books in Order

Erin Beaty grew up in Indianapolis, Indiana, and her road to fiction was anything but tidy. She graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy in 2000 with a degree in aerospace engineering, specifically astronautics, along with German. That is a very technical start for someone who now writes young adult fantasy, but it also helps explain why her books feel carefully built, with systems, logistics, and consequences that actually matter.

Rocket science is not the usual road to novels.

After the academy, Beaty served as a weapons officer on a combat destroyer and later taught leadership at the Center for Naval Leadership. Those jobs put her inside strict hierarchies where people had to make fast decisions and live with them. You can see echoes of that background in her novels, which are full of chain of command problems, split loyalties, covert missions, and people trying to do the right thing with limited information.

Writing came later, and in a more ordinary way. After time as a stay-at-home mother and Navy wife, she kept a casual family blog, then started her first novel in the spring of 2014. She has said she never expected to be an author at all, and that sense of surprise still hangs around her public bio, which makes her feel more like a real person who stumbled into storytelling and kept going.

Then the books arrived.

Her debut, The Traitor's Kiss, arrived in 2017 and introduced Sage Fowler, a smart, stubborn young woman who gets pulled from matchmaking into espionage and court politics. Beaty followed it with The Traitor's Ruin and The Traitor's Kingdom, turning Sage's story into a full trilogy. Readers who click with these books usually like the same things: a heroine who notices everything, romance that grows under pressure, and a fantasy world driven more by politics, war, and deception than by flashy magic.

Later, Beaty moved into darker territory with Blood and Moonlight and Silence and Shadow. These books follow Catrin and Simon through murder investigations, forbidden moonlit magic, and cities where secrets seem built into the stone. The mood is tenser and more shadowy than in the Sage books, but some of the same interests remain, especially questions of trust, social power, and what happens when a young woman sees more than the people around her want to admit.

That through line matters. Across both series, Beaty tends to write women who are sharp before they are glamorous, and useful before anyone gives them permission to be. Her stories return again and again to loyalty, leadership, class, prejudice, and the way institutions shape ordinary lives. Even when the setting is invented, there is usually a historical pull to it, which fits her own joking line that she never quite lived in her own time.

Her life off the page sounds full, and not especially quiet. She and her husband have five children, two cats, and a vegetable garden, and military life has taken the family to places ranging from Korea to Kansas. She has also taught writing through The Muse Writers Center and Armed Services Arts Partnership, and has served on the advisory board of Hampton Roads Writers. That mix of service life, family life, teaching, and imagination helps explain why her fiction feels both engineered and lived in, careful on the plot side, but still warm-blooded about people.
