Author bio
Erica Ridley writes historical romance with a light touch, quick banter, and a real fondness for people who do not fit the boxes society has made for them. Many readers first meet her through The Duke Heist, The Perks of Loving a Wallflower, or the snowy comfort of Once Upon a Duke, but her shelves range from war-scarred Regencies to Gothic romance to young adult horror with The Protégée.
She wanted to be a writer from the time she could hold a crayon. As a child she wrote horror stories, and as a teenager she filled spiral notebooks with long, dramatic tales of her own.
Then adult life got practical. Ridley set writing aside for a while, worked in the real world, and later said it was only after that break that she understood writing was more than a hobby to her. She took it seriously in 2006, found representation in 2007, sold her first book in 2008, reached the USA Today list in 2014, and hit the top ten of the New York Times list in 2016.
Romance was the genre that stuck.
She has said romance gives her everything she wants as a reader: humor, suspense, emotion, sexual tension, a love story, and a happy ending. That blend explains a lot about her books. The Dukes of War novels pair returning soldiers with the glitter and absurdity of Regency society. Rogues to Riches plays with class difference, masquerades, wagers, and Cinderella turns. 12 Dukes of Christmas shifts into full comfort-read mode, with winter weather, village gossip, and one holiday duke after another.
She likes outsiders.
That may be clearest in the Wild Wynchesters books, which begin with The Governess Gambit and The Duke Heist. The series follows an adopted family of talented orphans who stage capers, help people the law overlooks, and fall in love along the way. Readers who enjoy found family, secret identities, and a little mischief tend to settle into those books very quickly. Ridley has also used that same warmth and playfulness in books like Nobody's Princess, while titles such as Undressing the Duke show how comfortably she moves toward queerer, more openly rebellious love stories.
She also changes flavors without losing her sense of fun. The Gothic Love Stories books go darker, with isolated manors, pirate coves, haunted settings, and even a vampire. The Magic & Mayhem trilogy brings in contemporary paranormal chaos. And with The Protégée, she stepped into young adult thriller and horror, trading ballrooms for danger without giving up pace or tension.
Outside the books, Ridley has long talked about her love of travel. She has described zip-lining in Costa Rica, riding camels in Africa, and getting lost in Budapest. She lives in Costa Rica, on a macadamia farm, and has joked that she is lucky to have rainforest, mountains, and beach close enough to count as home turf.
That restless energy fits her fiction. Even when the setting is a ballroom, a snowy village, or a moonlit estate, there is usually a scheme going sideways, a secret coming loose, or two stubborn people discovering that love may be the one thing they cannot organize into neat little boxes.
