Erica Monroe Books in Order

Erica Monroe grew up in Maryland in a house where books were part of everyday life. Her mother was a school librarian, her father loved science fiction, and she has said that both of them backed her interest in writing from the start. She has also talked about having supportive teachers, which helps explain why writing was not a late discovery for her. It was the thing she wanted early, and kept moving toward.

Books were everywhere.

In college, she studied writing and spent a lot of time in nineteenth-century British literature. Dickens, Wilkie Collins, Charlotte Bronte, Shakespeare, and Jane Austen all left a mark, but so did the bigger ideas around them: class, secrecy, social pressure, and the pull of Gothic atmosphere. You can feel that background in her fiction. Even when the stories are romantic, they tend to come with danger, locked doors, hard choices, and people trying to make a life inside systems that were not built to be kind.

She did not begin in one neat lane. Before settling into historical romance, she wrote science fiction, fantasy, contemporary work, and short fiction. Over time, she found that romance, especially Regency and early nineteenth-century romance with suspense built into it, gave her the right mix of feeling, history, and plot. That is where her voice really clicked into place.

The darker edge stayed.

A lot of readers meet Monroe through A Dangerous Invitation, the first Rookery Rogues novel. Instead of staying in drawing rooms, that series goes into the rookeries of London, with thieves, factory workers, police officers, fences, and women doing whatever they can to survive. Books like Secrets in Scarlet, Beauty and the Rake, and Stealing the Rogue's Heart keep that same energy: romantic, yes, but also tense, messy, and interested in people who do not usually get center stage in historical romance.

She can shift gears, though. I Spy a Duke moves into aristocratic spy territory, with secret missions, political danger, and a marriage-of-convenience setup. The Gothic Brides books, including The Mad Countess and The Determined Duchess, lean into haunted moods, grief, family curses, murder, and strange science. Across all of them, Monroe returns to some of the same questions: who gets believed, who gets left out, what women are allowed to want, and how love survives when the stakes are high.

That focus is personal as well as creative.

Monroe has written openly about living with chronic illness, and she chose the flexibility of independent publishing in part because it let her control her schedule and keep writing on terms that worked for her health. She has also said that everyone deserves a love story, and that idea runs through her work. Her heroes and heroines are often scarred, grieving, poor, socially awkward, or carrying reputations they did not ask for. She was a finalist for the Daphne du Maurier Award for Excellence in Romantic Suspense, and her books have built a loyal readership among readers who want more grit in their historical romance.

These days, Monroe lives in North Carolina with her husband, daughter, and a lively collection of rescue pets. She has shared that she loves coffee, television, comic books, true crime, and the odd corners of history that make research fun. She has also noted that she is on a writing sabbatical, but her existing books still make a clear impression: historical romances with shadows in them, and happy endings that feel earned.
