Emry Merlin Books in Order

The Emry Merlin books are a playful, queer-friendly reworking of Arthurian legend, set before Camelot becomes the familiar storybook kingdom. At the center is Emry Merlin, a gifted young wizard whose ability matters less to the world around her than the fact that she is a girl. Since girls are forbidden to study magic, Emry takes the place of her twin brother and reaches King Uther’s court disguised as him.

The Other Merlin drops her into a crowded court of ambitious teenagers and adults with plans of their own. Prince Arthur is clever, lonely, and far less interested in being shaped into a ruler than his father expects. Lancelot, Guinevere, Gawain, and other recognizable figures arrive with altered histories, giving the series room to explore status, identity, friendship, crushes, and loyalty without treating the old legend as fixed.

Secrets do not stay secret for long.

Emry’s relationship with Arthur drives much of the emotional tension, but these books are not only romances. Her magic is powerful and sometimes hard to control, while court rules determine who gets access to learning, influence, and safety. As Emry claims more of her real identity, Arthur has to face the future that has been assigned to him, including expectations about kingship and marriage. Their friends are dealing with their own reputations, secrets, and hopes, so court life is always a little messier than it looks.

In The Future King, the story expands beyond Camelot as Emry and Arthur pursue help for her increasingly dangerous magic. A trip to the French court brings new allies, old problems, and more pressure around Arthur’s supposed destiny. By The New Camelot, the stakes reach the kingdom itself, with dark magic, a threat of war, and a difficult quest pushing Emry, Arthur, and Lance to work out what kind of future they are willing to fight for.

The tone is quick, funny, and full of courtly gossip, awkward attraction, and sharp banter. But there is real danger underneath the jokes. The series cares about who gets excluded from power, how young people respond to traditions that harm them, and whether a legend can be changed before it hardens into history.

Start with The Other Merlin. The trilogy tells one continuing story, and each book builds on Emry’s growing confidence, Arthur’s changing role, and the political trouble gathering around Camelot.
