Emperor of the Universe Books in Order

The Emperor of the Universe books take a very ordinary middle school problem, feeling small in a huge world, and answer it in the least ordinary way possible. David Lubar gives seventh grader Nicholas V. Landrew a job title that sounds impossible, then makes him deal with it while homework, chores, parents, and exhaustion keep piling up. That mix is the whole charm of the series. It is big science fiction built on kid-sized frustrations.

Nicholas lives in Yelm, Washington, and at first he is not exactly the sort of hero who seems destined for cosmic greatness. Then the universe has other ideas. Suddenly he is thrown into a sprawling intergalactic mess involving aliens, impossible responsibilities, and a supporting cast that tells you right away Lubar is in full comic mode. Nicholas has help from Henrietta, his pet gerbil, and from Jeef, who is much more important than the phrase package of ground beef would lead you to expect.

It gets weird fast.

What makes the series work is that Lubar never treats the absurdity as a throwaway joke. The universe is full of strange creatures, faraway worlds, and baffling politics, but Nicholas still reacts like a real kid would. He is overwhelmed, curious, annoyed, and sometimes more interested in getting through the day than in acting regal. That contrast keeps the books funny while also giving them a real point of view. The cosmic stakes matter, but so does whether Nicholas can keep his life from falling apart back home.

The tone is energetic, goofy, and packed with side jokes, but there is more structure here than in pure nonsense comedy. Nicholas keeps getting pushed into bigger decisions. He has to figure out who to trust, how to handle power he never asked for, and what sort of person he wants to be when the whole universe starts making demands. Readers who like science fiction that moves quickly, keeps the pages turning, and never gets too solemn will feel at home here.

This is also a good David Lubar series for readers who enjoy his short stories but want a longer adventure. The same sense of surprise is still there, but now it has room to build into a larger arc. Across the books, the universe opens wider, the dangers get stranger, and Nicholas has to grow into his role whether he feels ready or not. Under all the alien chaos, it is still a story about a kid trying to do his best in a job nobody could possibly be prepared for.

That job just happens to be emperor of the universe.
