The Nathan Abercrombie, Accidental Zombie books take a gross-out joke and build a full adventure series on top of it. Nathan is a ten-year-old kid having a rotten day when he gets splashed with an experimental serum and turns into a half-dead zombie. That gives Lubar a wonderful double setup. Nathan now has genuine undead problems, but he still has to survive school, bullies, gym, and the ordinary humiliations of being a kid.

Being half dead does have perks.

Nathan does not need sleep, and he does not feel pain, which sounds useful right up until you remember that bodies still break even when they do not hurt. Lubar gets a lot of humor out of that logic. Nathan's condition is disgusting, inconvenient, and occasionally handy, all at once. The books never let the series drift too far into pure horror or pure comedy. The gross stuff is funny. The danger is real enough to matter.

Nathan is not carrying the story alone, either. His adventures are shaped by the friends and enemies around him. Abigail and Mookie help give the series its rhythm, while school bullies and increasingly strange adults keep the pressure on. As the books go on, the scope widens beyond one boy's body problem. Secret groups, spy missions, and bigger conspiracies start creeping in, which gives the series more momentum without losing its original school-story roots.

That shift is one of the fun things about the books. The first appeal is obvious, what if a regular kid became a zombie. But Lubar keeps finding new ways to use the idea. Nathan's un-life opens doors into mysteries, schemes, and missions that would never work with an ordinary hero. He is awkward, scared, sarcastic, and more capable than he looks, which makes him a good guide through all the mess.

The tone stays fast, funny, and very readable. These books are built for middle grade readers who like monsters but also want jokes, cliffhangers, and a hero who sounds like a real kid rather than a mini adult. Nathan complains, improvises, and keeps going even when the situation becomes truly absurd.

At heart, this is a friendship-and-survival series wearing zombie makeup. Nathan wants his life back, but he also has to figure out who he is while living in a body that no longer behaves normally. That gives the books a little more heart than the premise first suggests. They are gross in the best way, quick on the page, and a strong pick for readers who want horror that never forgets to be funny.
