Series background & context

Embraced by Magic is the continuation of Kerrelyn Sparks's Aerthlan fantasy romance world under a new series label. It begins by finishing the stories of the last two original sisters, then pushes the timeline forward and shows what their hard-won peace looks like for the next generation. So if the first Embraced books are about hidden girls stepping into power, these books are about what happens after queens are crowned, enemies regroup, and younger heirs start making dangerous choices of their own.

The opening pair, How to Love Your Elf and The Siren and the Deep Blue Sea, still feel closely tied to the original five-sisters arc. Sorcha leaves the relative safety of her family to deal with elves, rebellion, and a mysterious woodsman who is more than he first appears. Maeve's book widens the danger further, sending her after Brody, the shifter-spy she refuses to give up on, while the threat of the Circle of Five starts pulling more of the world into open conflict. These books keep the romance front and center, but they also make it clear that Aerthlan's problems did not end once the sisters found their places.

This is where the world gets wider.

By the time you reach When a Princess Proposes and When a Dragon Falls, the series has jumped about twenty years. The five Embraced women are now queens and mothers, and the spotlight shifts to younger characters who grew up in a world shaped by their victories. Princess Eviana and eagle-shifter Quentin are dealing with court pressure, suspicious deaths, and a threat that no longer looks like the old one. Princess Lenushka, a dragon shifter expected to marry for political advantage, is thrown together with Bran Morris, a man carrying vengeance and far too many secrets. These later books feel a little more political and generational, but they still move with Sparks's usual mix of action, banter, and emotional clarity.

The tone is still lighter than grim epic fantasy, which matters. There are conspiracies, kidnappings, old enemies, and dangerous magical gifts, but Sparks never loses sight of the romance or the fun of the world. Returning family members, sibling dynamics, royal meddling, and animal-shifter complications keep the books from becoming too solemn. You are meant to care about the kingdoms, but you are also meant to enjoy the ride.

This sequence works best if you already know the earlier Embraced books, because relationships, bloodlines, and old battles all feed into the later stakes. Even so, Embraced by Magic has its own identity. It is about aftermath, inheritance, and the next wave of trouble. Start with How to Love Your Elf if you are following this label specifically, but if you are completely new to Aerthlan, it is wiser to begin earlier and then come here once the original sisterhood is in place.
