What makes this series work is that Ella never feels like a tourist drifting through costume drama. She is pushed hard by each new era. In Heidelberg she faces a violent older world with almost none of her normal protections. In Cairo she runs into danger at the edge of a famous discovery. In Key West she is thrown into a rougher, riskier adventure shaped by treasure, deception, and survival. Each stop asks something different of her.

Rowan is central here too. Their relationship gives the trilogy its emotional pull. Lewis likes writing capable women, but she also likes writing the moment when capability alone is not enough, when intimacy, partnership, and vulnerability become part of how a character survives. Ella and Rowan are at their best when they have to depend on each other without losing themselves.

The pace is brisk.

These books are not meant to sit still for long. But for all the motion, the series still cares about feeling. Ella changes across the books, and that change is part of the reward.
