Elizabeth Corley Books in Order

Elizabeth Corley grew up in West Sussex, England, and followed an unusual route into crime fiction. Long before her detective novels appeared, she was building a career in financial services, learning how large organizations work and how pressure can shape people.

Her first job was in a local shoe shop. She then joined Sun Alliance Life & Pensions and spent a decade there, eventually moving into a senior sales role. From there she worked in management consulting at Coopers & Lybrand, then joined Mercury Asset Management, which later became part of Merrill Lynch Investment Managers.

This was not a temporary diversion before writing. Corley continued to take on major financial roles even as she developed her fiction, balancing boardrooms and deadlines rather than choosing one over the other.

Numbers by day, crime by night.

Her first published novel, Requiem Mass, arrived in 1998 and introduced Detective Chief Inspector Andrew Fenwick. The opening case links present-day violence to a tragedy among school friends years earlier, setting the pattern for stories that ask how long old loyalties and buried guilt can last. Fatal Legacy followed in 2000, bringing Fenwick into a wealthy family's troubled business affairs.

The later books widen the focus without losing the central team. In Grave Doubts, Sergeant Louise Nightingale becomes the target of a killer after an undercover operation. Innocent Blood places Fenwick and Nightingale on connected but very different investigations, while Dead of Winter follows the search for a missing schoolgirl across a hard Sussex winter.

Corley's novels are police procedurals with psychological suspense at their core. The crimes can be grim, but the books also stay close to the people doing the work: Fenwick's instincts, Nightingale's nerve, the strain of police politics, and the way an investigation can press into family life.

West Sussex matters to the series. The area is more than a backdrop, with rural isolation, schools, businesses, and close local networks giving the cases their shape. That sense of place helps the books feel grounded even when the stakes turn dangerous.

Corley has also been closely involved with the crime-writing community. She served as a committee member and vice-chair of the Crime Writers' Association, and was shortlisted for the Dagger in the Library award in 2008.

Her finance career kept moving too. She served as chief executive of Allianz Global Investors, first in Europe and later globally, from 2005 to 2016. In 2022, she became chair of Schroders, after joining its board in 2021, while continuing to bring a practical interest in institutions, decisions, and private motives to her crime fiction.
