Author bio
Elizabeth Chadwick was born in Bury, Lancashire, in 1957 and grew up between England and Scotland. As a child in Newton Mearns near Glasgow she was already spinning stories, climbing into the worlds inside her picture books and television dramas. History, especially anything with horses, armour or adventure, grabbed her imagination early.
When her family moved to Nottingham around the age of ten, that love of stories came with her. She began writing historical tales in her teens, including an early novel set in the twelfth-century Holy Land, and realised this was what she wanted to do for a living. The apprenticeship was long, with plenty of rejections, but she kept learning and submitting.
In 1989 a turning point arrived. On the strength of a synopsis and three chapters, literary agent Carole Blake took on her novel The Wild Hunt and sold it at auction to a major publisher. The book later won a Betty Trask Award, presented to Chadwick in London, and opened the door to a full-time career in historical fiction.
Not long afterwards she was commissioned to turn the film script for First Knight into a novel on a tight deadline. Adapting the Arthurian story of King Arthur, Guinevere and Lancelot under that kind of time pressure taught her a different sort of discipline. It also confirmed that she enjoyed working where big history and intimate emotion meet.
Research has always been a hands-on affair. Chadwick is a member of Regia Anglorum, a medieval re-enactment group, and has spent years handling replica weapons, clothing and everyday objects to understand how they work. That experience filters into her novels in small, concrete details – how a cloak hangs when it is wet, or the sound of boots on a spiral stair – as much as in the big political set pieces.
Her books return again and again to the high medieval period and to real families such as the Marshals, Bigods and Angevins. Novels like The Greatest Knight, The Scarlet Lion, Lady of the English and The Summer Queen follow figures whose names appear in chronicles but whose inner lives are often left blank. Across dozens of stories she explores loyalty, marriage, land and power, always with an eye on how large events press on individual women and men.
Along the way she has picked up prizes from romance and historical-fiction organisations, including an award for To Defy a King, and repeat shortlistings for books such as The Champion and Lords of the White Castle. Booksellers and reviewers have regularly highlighted her work, and her novels have been translated into many languages and reached readers across Europe and North America.
Chadwick also tutors aspiring writers in historical and romantic fiction, speaks at festivals and heritage sites, and has been consulted for television documentaries about the medieval world. She still lives in Nottinghamshire with her family and dogs. Several decades after those first daydreams in front of the classroom blackboard, she continues to dig into archives, pull on a tunic for re-enactment, and turn the raw material of the Middle Ages into vivid, human stories.
