The Summer Queen

by Elizabeth Chadwick

First in the Eleanor of Aquitaine trilogy, this novel follows teenage Alienor as she inherits Aquitaine and becomes queen of France. From arranged marriage and crusade to courtroom intrigues, she learns how little power a queen can wield—and how much she might still claim.

Series background & context

The Eleanor of Aquitaine trilogy follows one remarkable woman from teenage duchess to seasoned widow and matriarch. Each volume stands alone, but together The Summer Queen, The Winter Crown and The Autumn Throne chart Alienor’s long life at the heart of twelfth-century Europe.

The Summer Queen opens with thirteen-year-old Alienor inheriting the vast duchy of Aquitaine and being married at speed to Louis, heir to the French throne. The novel traces her years as queen of France through pilgrimages, crusade, court rivalries and a marriage that slowly suffocates both partners. It ends with Alienor claiming a risky freedom that will reshape her future.

In The Winter Crown Alienor is now queen of England beside Henry II. At first they are a formidable partnership, ruling a sprawling empire from the Scottish borders to the Pyrenees while raising a houseful of children. Over time Henry sidelines her, favours a young mistress and expects obedience instead of counsel, pushing Alienor toward decisions that will have consequences for the whole dynasty.

The Autumn Throne covers her later years, when imprisonment, age and grief have not dulled her political instincts. Freed after Henry’s death, Alienor must help secure Richard’s throne, negotiate ransoms, cross the Alps in harsh weather and manage the ambitions of his brother John. As a dowager queen and grandmother, she works to place sons and grandchildren safely, even while family rivalries threaten to tear everything apart.

Throughout the trilogy Chadwick pays close attention to the texture of life at court – the journeys, ceremonies, gossip and practical burdens that come with crowns. The novels balance private emotion with public duty, showing Alienor as a woman who loves, loses and ages while never quite stepping out of the arena.

You can begin with any of the three, but reading them in order lets you watch the same characters grow, falter and change over decades. The result is a slow-burn portrait of power, marriage and survival from a female point of view in an age usually told through kings.
