Series background & context

Elephant & Piggie Like Reading! is the “next step” for a lot of kids who fall in love with Gerald and Piggie and then want more books that feel similar. The idea is simple: Elephant and Piggie show up as friendly hosts, and then they introduce a complete beginner-reader story that’s written in an easy-to-follow style.

It’s basically a bridge from “I can read one series” to “I can read lots of series.”

The books in this line feature different characters and different creators, but they share a consistent reading experience. The pages have lots of white space, the text is broken into short chunks, and the stories move quickly. Elephant and Piggie often pop in at the beginning and end, which helps kids feel like they’re still in a familiar world even as they meet someone new.

A lot of the stories build around one clear problem that kids can grasp right away. The Cookie Fiasco turns snack time into a puzzle, how do four friends share three cookies fairly? We Are Growing! uses a group of excited plants to talk about comparison and confidence. The Good for Nothing Button is a silly argument about whether a button really “does nothing,” and it sneaks in emotional vocabulary along the way.

Other titles lean into wordplay and perspective. It’s Shoe Time! takes a closet full of shoes and asks what makes two shoes a real pair. It’s a Sign! follows four friends who want to start a club but can’t agree on a name, until a literal sign helps. The Itchy Book! turns a group of dinosaurs into a chorus of “don’t scratch!” energy, and Harold & Hog Pretend For Real! uses pretend play to show how friends can want different things at the same time.

A few books teach by stealth. What About Worms!? centers on a brave character with one very specific fear, and I’m On It! plays with prepositions while also showing how friendship gets tested when one friend always wants to lead. Kids come for the jokes, but they end up practicing real reading skills: predicting, rereading, and following dialogue.

Because each book is self-contained, you can read them in any order. Young readers often pick by cover and topic, cookies, shoes, clubs, worms, and that’s a perfectly good way to do it. The fun of the line is the variety: the stories feel connected by format and humor, but they don’t all sound the same.

If you’re looking for a place to start, choose the book that matches your reader’s current obsession, and then let Elephant and Piggie guide the jump to the next one.
