Dan Santat Books in Order

Dan Santat was born in Brooklyn in 1975 to Thai immigrant parents, then spent most of his childhood in Ventura County, California, growing up in Camarillo. He has talked about being one of the only Thai American kids around, and about how drawing became a private, reliable thing early on. He copied images from comic books and television, and that mix of cartoon timing and big visual energy still shows up in his work.

His parents hoped he would go into medicine. For a while, that looked like the plan. He studied microbiology at the University of California, San Diego, with dentistry in mind, before friends kept telling him the obvious thing: he should try art school. He pulled together a portfolio quickly, got into the ArtCenter College of Design in Pasadena, and graduated in illustration in 2001.

That turn changed everything.

After school, Santat worked in video games, took freelance illustration jobs, and kept building his own stories on the side. A children's book conference helped open the next door. He showed an editor a dummy book, landed an early two-book deal, and published The Guild of Geniuses in 2004. Not long after that, he created the Disney animated series The Replacements. The schedule was brutal, and he eventually stepped away from TV work so he could focus on books.

That choice seems to fit him.

Readers who come to Santat through picture books usually start with The Adventures of Beekle, the story of an imaginary friend who gets tired of waiting and goes looking for his person. It won the 2015 Caldecott Medal, but the bigger reason it stuck is simple: it feels warm, strange, and a little lonely in a way kids instantly get. After the Fall does something similar with Humpty Dumpty, turning a nursery rhyme character into someone dealing with fear after an accident. Are We There Yet? goes in a more playful direction, using a long car ride to mess with time itself.

His graphic novels show the same range. Sidekicks turns superhero pets into a funny story about jealousy, teamwork, and wanting attention from the person you love. The Aquanaut mixes sea-creature adventure with grief, found family, and questions about what people owe the natural world. Then A First Time for Everything brought things much closer to home. In that graphic memoir, Santat looks back on bullying, family pressure, and a middle school trip through Europe that opened his world up. The book won the 2023 National Book Award for Young People's Literature.

He makes funny books, but he rarely makes empty ones.

A lot of Santat's stories are about outsiders, anxious kids, or odd little beings trying to find where they belong. He likes high-concept setups, imaginary friends, superhero pets, time travel, and talking animals, but underneath the jokes there is usually something more familiar: loneliness, embarrassment, worry, or the small brave decision to try again. That mix is probably why his work lands with both read-aloud families and older kids ready for graphic novels.

He also talks pretty openly about insecurity, burnout, and how long it took to trust his own path, which makes his career feel less like a magic trick and more like steady, stubborn work. These days he lives in Southern California with his family and keeps moving between picture books, graphic novels, and illustration for other writers. The format changes, but the appeal is consistent. Santat knows how to make a page move, how to land a joke, and how to slip real feeling in before you notice.
