Author bio
Edward Willett was born in Silver City, New Mexico, in 1959. His family moved from Texas to Weyburn, Saskatchewan, when he was eight, and the Canadian prairie became a lasting part of his life and fiction.
He studied journalism at Harding University in Arkansas, then returned to Weyburn to work at the Weyburn Review, first as a reporter and photographer and later as news editor. He moved to Regina in 1988 for a communications job at the Saskatchewan Science Centre.
Writing was already pulling at him.
In 1993, Willett left his staff job to become a full-time freelance writer. The choice led him into a remarkably wide range of work: newspaper and radio science columns, computer manuals, science books for younger readers, biographies, historical nonfiction, plays, and novels for children, teens, and adults.
His early fiction shows how comfortably he moves between genres. Soulworm sends a young guardian into the mind of a Saskatchewan teenager to stop a dangerous creature from another world. The Dark Unicorn follows a young musician caught up in a magical struggle. In Spirit Singer, a teenage apprentice must complete a spiritual quest after the death of her mentor. These books combine adventure with young characters trying to figure out who they are and what they owe other people.
His science fiction often starts with a big idea, then brings it down to a few people under pressure. Lost in Translation centers on a human empath trying to prevent war between alien cultures. Marseguro, which won the Aurora Award in 2009, pits a peaceful colony of humans and genetically modified Selkies against a militant Earth force. The Cityborn follows two young people from opposite levels of a rigid city as they uncover why its society works the way it does.
Then there is the fun stuff, too.
The Worldshapers novels begin with potter Shawna Keys learning that she can shape reality and traveling through a maze of worlds inspired by different kinds of stories. The Tangled Stars is a lively space-opera heist featuring a debt-ridden con artist, a stolen starship, and a talking cat who happens to be first mate. Willett also writes for younger readers, as in Star Song, The Haunted Horn, and Fireboy.
He has written under other names, including E.C. Blake and Lee Arthur Chane, but the same interests keep returning: outsiders, divided communities, strange worlds, science, music, and people faced with choices that have real consequences. Saskatchewan settings and prairie details appear often, even when the action heads far beyond Earth.
Willett works from Regina, Saskatchewan. He founded Shadowpaw Press in 2018 and hosts The Worldshapers, a podcast in which he talks with writers about how they build imagined worlds. He is also an actor and singer who has performed in plays, musicals, and operas.
It is a busy creative life, and it suits him.
