The Edward Crisp books are modern village mysteries built around the kind of person most crime novels leave in the background. Edward Crisp is a shy school librarian in the seaside community of Chalk Gap, and he begins as someone who would far rather read about murder than get anywhere near a real one. Then a killing lands on his doorstep, and Edward finds that his knowledge of classic detective fiction may actually be useful. From there, the series follows him as he keeps getting pulled into local cases he never asked for.

He is not a slick detective, and that is most of the fun.

Chalk Gap matters almost as much as Edward does. The village sits by the sea beneath chalk cliffs, and Peter Boon uses that setting well: schools, churches, beaches, shops, and hotel launches all feel close enough that everybody knows everybody, or thinks they do. That small-town pressure gives the books their shape. Motives grow out of gossip, old grudges, and private secrets, and even a quiet snow day can turn into a trap when nobody can leave.

Edward rarely works alone. His teenage library assistant Noah becomes his eager sidekick, bringing energy, confidence, and a crime-fiction fan's willingness to see a puzzle everywhere. Later stories also make room for Fiona, a local reporter who becomes part of Edward's circle. One of the pleasures of the series is watching this little team take shape while Edward slowly grows braver, even as his anxiety and self-doubt never disappear completely.

The cases shift in size and tone, but they stay rooted in ordinary English life. Who Killed Miss Finch? begins with a murdered head teacher. The Snow Day Murders traps the whole village in bad weather. Other stories deal with a suspicious suicide, a football star about to come out, a staged murder mystery that turns real, and a threatening Christmas card. Some entries are full novels and some are shorter novellas or a novelette, so the series has a nice rhythm: bigger investigations, then brisker side trips that still move Edward's world along.

In tone, these are cozy mysteries with a modern edge. The focus is on suspects, clues, and the pleasure of working out who did it, not on graphic violence or forensic detail. There is humour, a bit of heart, and an obvious affection for the Golden Age tradition, but the books also leave room for present-day concerns and queer characters.

Read them in order if you can, because the mysteries stand alone but Edward's relationships, confidence, and little circle of allies build steadily from book to book.
