Ropa is the reason the series works.

She is funny, sharp, stubborn, and always a little bit skint. In The Library of the Dead, whispers from the dead pull her into a case about missing children and an occult library beneath the city. In Our Lady of Mysterious Ailments, a baffling coma at a magical hospital sends her hunting through buried history and institutional secrets. The Mystery at Dunvegan Castle takes her to the Isle of Skye for a convention that turns into a murder investigation inside a castle full of suspects.

Across the books, Ropa keeps running into the same basic problem. She has talent, nerve, and good instincts, but the people who control magic are older, richer, and invested in keeping power to themselves. That makes the series about more than solving cases. It is also about class, gatekeeping, family loyalty, colonial history, and what it means to claim knowledge that was never meant for you. Friends like Priya matter a lot, and so do more complicated figures like Sir Ian Callander, who can be mentor, ally, and headache all at once.

By the time you reach The Legacy of Arniston House and Secrets of the First School, the stakes are much bigger, but the books still feel personal. Murders, cults, and magical conspiracies matter because Ropa's family is on the line, and because she is still trying to build a life in a city that rarely makes anything easy.

These are mysteries with ghosts, secret institutions, and plenty of dry humor, but they never drift far from ordinary pressures like work, money, grief, and belonging. If you like fantasy with a strong voice and a real sense of place, Edinburgh Nights is an easy series to sink into.
