Author bio

D.W. Ulsterman writes mysteries, thrillers, political suspense, and stories about people under pressure. His books move from the misty waters of Washington's San Juan Islands to Washington, D.C., Montana ranch country, remote Alaska, and imagined futures where survival is never simple.

He has kept much of his early life private, so public profiles do not offer much detail about where he was born or raised. What is clear is that the Pacific Northwest matters to his work. The region's islands, forests, small towns, and long stretches of water show up again and again, not just as scenery but as places where people carry secrets and have to live with what they choose.

Ulsterman began publishing fiction in the early 2010s. His early work included the Mac Walker stories, fast-moving action thrillers centered on a former Navy SEAL, and the Frank Bennington books, which follow a weary former Washington insider turned private investigator. Both series mix danger, political distrust, and characters who tend to act before they have every answer.

He has said that he sometimes gets up and acts out scenes while writing, a habit that helps him picture how a moment might unfold. His listed influences include writers such as Vince Flynn, Brad Thor, Tom Clancy, Stephen King, J. D. Salinger, Elmore Leonard, Charles Bukowski, and C. J. Box. That broad reading list helps explain why his books can shift between military action, private-eye mysteries, family drama, and the supernatural.

Then came The Writer, the novel that introduced college journalist Adele Plank and the San Juan Islands Mystery series. Adele starts as a young reporter drawn into a troubling interview with a reclusive novelist, then becomes the center of a continuing run of island-set mysteries. The books pair murders, local history, uneasy friendships, and romance with the practical details of boats, marinas, weather, and close-knit communities.

The island setting has become a home base for his fiction.

Outside that series, The Irish Cowboy takes a more personal route, using Montana country and family history for a story about regret, love, and second chances. The later Montana Adventures books, including Savage and Vaughn's Hill, keep returning to questions of inheritance, land, loyalty, and what a community will do when its world begins to change. The Bowman Boys goes back to Prohibition-era Washington, following a family trying to protect its place in a rough mountain town.

Ulsterman also writes overtly speculative and political fiction. Dominatus and Tumultus imagine a future United States under an authoritarian global regime, while the Race Wars omnibus volumes follow a country split apart by violence and manipulation. These books are blunt, high-stakes stories, often built around people deciding whether to run, hide, or resist.

His work is connected by a few steady interests: outsiders who become protectors, communities with long memories, family bonds, political power used badly, and the cost of telling the truth. Even when the stories move into conspiracy or apocalypse, they usually stay focused on a small group of people trying to hold on to one another.

Ulsterman has described living in the Pacific Northwest with his wife and family, and spending time on the waters around the San Juan Islands. That connection comes through on the page. The boats know the tides, the towns know their gossip, and the landscape is never merely a backdrop.
