DW Linden Books in Order

D.W. Linden writes fiction rooted in the American West, especially Colorado's plains and the long shadows of the region's history. His books move between contemporary crime stories and historical adventure, but they keep returning to people trying to make a life in hard country.

Before publishing fiction, Linden built a varied working life. He has worked as a carpenter, cab driver, ordained minister, school teacher, musician, and attorney.

That range of jobs puts ordinary work, faith, law, and community close to the surface of his stories. His characters are often people with messy pasts, practical problems, and no easy way out.

Linden's early experiences with the National Indian Youth Council and the American Indian Movement helped form the background for Sand Creek, his first Johnny Hart mystery.

Published in 2006, Sand Creek introduces Colorado deputy sheriff Johnny Hart, a former rodeo man whose life is coming apart when an old friend becomes tied to a frightening murder investigation. The novel brings together ranch country, Native American history, and a present-day crime, while keeping the pressure on Johnny's friendships and personal choices.

Johnny is a lawman who has plenty of problems of his own.

Linden continued that story with Rocky Ford, where Johnny investigates the death of a migrant worker and uncovers a case involving exploitation and murder. In By The River Of Lost Souls, Johnny faces a white supremacist gang bent on mass violence. Both books stay in southeastern Colorado, using the area's small towns, working landscapes, and unresolved history as part of the tension rather than simple scenery.

His historical novel The Second Son takes a different route. It follows Jose Juan Garcia, a young man raised among the Comanche after an alliance between communities makes him part of an exchange. When he returns to his family and his brother is killed, Jose's search for answers carries him through the changing frontier world around the opening of the Santa Fe Trail.
