Series background & context
The Duplicity Trilogy is one of Kylie Hillman’s darkest and most emotionally tangled story worlds. Despite the name, the arc now stretches across Tempting Fate, Making Choices, and the three Seizing Control volumes, so it reads more like one long, escalating relationship saga than a neat three-book shape.
At the center is Lily, a heroine trying to live after serious trauma while caught between two men who matter to her in very different ways. Around her are Ezekiel Miles, Carter Hudson, the Black Shamrocks orbit, and the long shadow of Alex Kingsley. That gives the series its core tension. This is not just a love triangle for drama’s sake. It is a story about survival, loyalty, grief, desire, and the way love can become both refuge and pressure point.
The setting stays Australian and stays close to the Shamrocks universe, which means club culture, family politics, and violence are never far away. But emotionally, this series feels even more intimate than the original MC books. The focus keeps narrowing down to what the characters owe each other, what they cannot forgive, and what parts of themselves they are still trying to reclaim.
That is why the books work best in order. Tempting Fate lays the emotional groundwork. Making Choices turns the screws tighter and makes the triangle impossible to ignore. The Seizing Control books then break the aftermath open, moving through grief, marriage, second chances, sexual power, and the question of whether love can survive when nobody comes into it whole.
The tone is dark, angsty, and openly messy. Hillman does not sand down the ugly feelings. Jealousy, guilt, possessiveness, and fear all get room on the page. But so do tenderness, found family, and the stubborn belief that damaged people still deserve a future.
If the original Black Shamrocks books are about love inside a dangerous world, the Duplicity books are about what happens after danger gets under the skin and refuses to leave. Readers who like long emotional arcs, taboo edges, and relationship stakes that feel genuinely hard will probably find a lot to dig into here.
