Series background & context

Dukes' Club is one of Eva Devon's foundational series, and you can feel her having fun with the whole idea from the start. The premise is deliciously simple: a circle of dukes, each larger than life in his own way, each carrying private weaknesses behind the public title, and each about to meet the woman who makes his usual defenses useless.

The first books lay that out beautifully. Once Upon a Duke gives us a wealthy widow who is finally free and a notorious duke who thinks his heart is finished. Dreaming of the Duke brings in an adventurous heroine with a life beyond England and beyond convention. Wish Upon a Duke shifts some of the action to Scotland and pairs a pleasure-loving widow with a man built out of duty.

The series likes contrasts.

That is really the engine here. Devon keeps matching women who know what they want, or are at least determined to find out, with men who have spent years pretending they do not need much of anything beyond control. Some books feel witty and bright. Others lean a little more emotional. But the overall mood stays lush, romantic, and fast moving.

Another good thing about Dukes' Club is its sense of continuity. The dukes are not isolated heroes who disappear after their book ends. Friends and relations return, teasing each other, interfering, or offering bad advice. That recurring cast gives the series a lived-in feeling, especially as you move deeper into titles like All About the Duke, Duke Ever After, and the later books.

These romances are full of classic historical appeal, ballrooms, country houses, widows, hidden wounds, family pressure, and men with reputations that need puncturing. Devon clearly enjoys the glamour of the genre, but she also makes space for sorrow, grief, and second chances.

If you want the big, swoony Eva Devon experience, this is one of the best places to go. The books are connected, emotional, and very easy to sink into, especially if you like your Regency romance with high rank, sharp banter, and generous amounts of longing.
