Series background & context
The DS Nikita Parekh novels shift the focus to a new corner of Bradford, following a British Asian detective whose personal life is as complicated as her caseload. Known as Nikki to almost everyone, she is a single mum with three children, a chaotic extended family and a nephew who often teeters on the edge of trouble. Crime, for her, is never something that happens in a vacuum.
In Last Request, human remains are unearthed beneath the city’s derelict Odeon car park, and the dead man turns out to be tied directly to Nikki’s own past. While the inquiry is initially handed to the Cold Case Unit, every new development pulls her back in, forcing her to confront old secrets at the same time as she tries to keep her nephew safe and her home life afloat.
Broken Silence raises the emotional stakes further when fellow detective Felicity Springer witnesses what looks like a kidnapping from a white van, crashes while calling for help and then disappears. With no clear evidence of whether Felicity is dead or alive, Nikki and DC Sajid Malik race to untangle her colleague’s last movements. The deeper they dig, the clearer it becomes that Felicity was hiding something that could get other people killed.
In Dark Memories, a homeless woman’s body under Bradford’s railway arches is followed by more murders, each accompanied by taunting messages aimed squarely at Nikki. The killer seems to know far too much about where she grew up. When a victim is found on the street where she spent her childhood, she is forced to revisit deeply buried trauma to understand why these crimes have been staged around her life.
Blood Games focuses on teenage victims. Three very different young people are murdered with different methods, but all are linked by a sense that someone is playing with them for sport. When a fourth boy disappears and his parents receive a disturbing package, Nikki’s investigation turns into a desperate attempt to read the killer’s rules and stop the next move.
In Dying Breath, the past closes in again when Nikki begins receiving postcards from the man who murdered her mother. Each card carries a threat and a postmark edging closer to Bradford. At the same time, unidentified remains are discovered in a remote barn on the frozen moors. Balancing her duty to the victims with her fear for her own family becomes the hardest choice she has faced.
The sixth book, End Game, opens with a scene as chilling as it is surreal: an entire family found dead around a Monopoly board at their country estate, with one playing piece and one player unaccounted for. Nikki and Saj must work out whether the missing person is a survivor, an accomplice or the mastermind of the whole set-up.
Taken together, the DS Nikita Parekh books offer tense, contemporary northern noir that blends procedural detail with family drama. They explore homelessness, racism, class, trauma and loyalty, all filtered through a detective who refuses to separate the job she does from the community she comes from.
