Series background & context

Drifters' Alliance is Casey's space opera lane, and it opens with a great hook: Cass Kennedy finally gets the drifter ship she has wanted for years, only to learn that owning your own vessel is a lot less tidy than the dream. The ship is the DS Anarchy, the crew is strange, the equipment is unreliable, and space itself is full of people who want something from her.

Book 1 is where the tone locks in. Cass is smart, stubborn, and eager to live on her own terms, but the universe refuses to keep things simple. A beat-up ship, a crew of oddballs, and the looming plans of the OSG push the series toward the kind of scrappy, humor-laced adventure that works best when the characters are as important as the action.

It gets political pretty quickly.

Books 2 and 3 widen the story from shipboard survival to bigger questions about the Alliance, loyalty, and who gets to stay independent in a heavily controlled future. Unexpected messages, hidden motives, and pressure from the OSG keep Cass and her crew moving, while the found-family side of the series keeps the books from becoming cold or overly technical.

If you like science fiction that moves fast and stays character-first, this is a strong place to start with Casey outside her romance and fantasy work. Read it in order, beginning with Drifters' Alliance, Book 1, because Cass's growth as captain is a big part of the appeal.
