Dreamland

by Dale Brown

2001

A spy scandal puts the Nevada test base nicknamed Dreamland on the chopping block just as a crisis erupts in Somalia. Colonel “Dog” Bastian, his daughter Breanna, and a team of pilots and engineers must prove the value of their Megafortress bombers and drones in a very real combat zone.

Series background & context

Dreamland is Dale Brown and Jim DeFelice’s playground for experimental weapons and ensemble casts. The series is built around a fictional top‑secret base in the Nevada desert—the High Technology Aerospace Weapons Center, nicknamed Dreamland—where cutting‑edge aircraft, unmanned systems, and special operations units are tested under fire.

The first book, Dreamland, opens with the base in political trouble after a spy scandal. Colonel Tecumseh “Dog” Bastian, a blunt, results‑oriented officer, is sent in to clean house and prove the place is worth keeping. Dreamland’s Megafortress bombers and their young crews—including Dog’s daughter, Breanna Stockard—are quickly thrown into a crisis in Somalia, where a humanitarian mission turns into a live test of new sensors, weapons, and command systems.

From there the series keeps moving. Nerve Center focuses on ANTARES, a program that links a pilot’s brain directly to multiple aircraft, letting a single operator fly several drones at once. When a test pilot begins to lose his grip on what’s real and what’s computer‑generated, the Dreamland team has to decide how far they’re willing to push technology in exchange for battlefield advantage.

In Razor's Edge, American planes are being shot down over Iraq by a mysterious weapon that behaves like no known missile or gun. Dreamland’s answer is Whiplash, a small, flexible special‑operations unit designed to deploy its toys quickly into danger zones. Tracking down what looks like a new kind of laser system, they find themselves balancing the need to protect pilots with the risk of widening a fragile conflict.

Piranha moves the action to the Pacific, where Indian and Chinese naval forces are edging toward a fight. Dreamland is given a chance to test a remote‑operated underwater probe under real‑world conditions, only to have Breanna Stockard shot down while trying to pull civilians out of harm’s way. The search‑and‑rescue effort turns into a race to stop a regional war.

Later entries like Strike Zone and Armageddon keep the focus on strange new threats—a “ghost clone” robot warplane that mimics Dreamland’s own drones, or terrorists going after the tiny kingdom of Brunei while its pilots are still learning to fly the EB‑52 Megafortress. Each book pairs a headline‑friendly hotspot with one or two very specific pieces of hardware, then explores what happens when that hardware is pushed a little too hard.

The middle of the series, including Satan's Tail, End Game, and Retribution, shows Dreamland and its successor unit Whiplash dealing with pirates in the Gulf of Aden, jihadist networks aiming to ignite war between India and Pakistan, and stolen nuclear devices that could be turned against American cities. The stories move freely between the cockpit, the Pentagon, the White House, and foreign capitals, with recurring characters like Dog Bastian, Breanna, Jeff “Zen” Stockard, Danny Freah, and intelligence chief Jonathon Reid carrying the emotional thread.

Later books such as Revolution, Whiplash, Black Wolf, Raven Strike, Collateral Damage, Drone Strike, and Target Utopia lean even harder into special operations and drones. The Whiplash team operates in Eastern Europe, Africa, the Middle East, and Southeast Asia, chasing pipeline saboteurs, rogue CIA factions, elite assassin teams, and extremists armed with stolen unmanned systems.

Taken together, the Dreamland novels bridge the gaps between Patrick McLanahan’s bomber‑centric adventures and the Brad McLanahan and Nick Flynn stories. They show how experimental tech born in the Nevada desert spreads outward into front‑line units and covert teams, and they offer a wide view of the same fictional world from many different cockpits and command posts.
