Dragons and Blades Books in Order

This is a smaller series, but it knows exactly what it is doing. Dragons and Blades takes the political and supernatural backdrop of the Dominion of the Fallen world and shifts the focus to an alternate 19th century Vietnamese court, where etiquette, family obligation, murder, and romance all have to share the same room. The result is part fantasy mystery, part comedy of manners, and part relationship story.

At the center are Thuan and Asmodeus. Thuan is a dragon prince, thoughtful, diplomatic, and usually the person trying to keep a situation from turning into a disaster. Asmodeus, his husband, is a Fallen angel who is sharp, ruthless, and often much too pleased when a dead body gives him something practical to do. Their marriage began as an arranged one, but the series is much more interested in what happens after the wedding, when affection is real and the hard work is learning how to build a future together.

That is the engine that keeps the books moving.

In Of Dragons, Feasts and Murders, Thuan brings Asmodeus home for Lunar New Year and gets far more than awkward family reunions. There is a corpse, there is political plotting, and there is the old problem of how much of yourself you can safely bring back to the place you came from. In Of Charms, Ghosts and Grievances, the pair are meant to be on holiday while helping care for children. Naturally, this leads to a murder scene, a hungry ghost who witnessed too much, and a fresh round of danger that forces them to work with, around, and occasionally against each other's instincts.

What makes the series especially appealing is the balance. The murders matter, and the stakes can turn serious very quickly, but the books never forget the pleasures of tea, family meals, sarcasm, and the simple comedy of two people with very different coping styles trying to handle the same crisis. Thuan wants diplomacy, patience, and calm. Asmodeus is much more likely to think in terms of knives and decisive action. The friction is funny, but it also reveals how well they know one another.

There is also more heart here than the sharp banter first suggests. These books care about parenting, extended family, duty, and the question of what a healthy relationship looks like when both partners come with damage, history, and very different ideas about safety. That gives the series more weight than a simple fantasy caper.

You do not need to read the larger Dominion books first, though it adds texture if you have. If you want the cleanest path, start with Of Dragons, Feasts and Murders and then move to Of Charms, Ghosts and Grievances. Expect ghosts, dragon courts, tense meals, murder investigations, and a couple who are at their best when the situation is getting worse.
