The opening book, The Secret of Pax Tharkas, brings together a handful of unlikely dwarven figures whose lives touch several different kingdoms and classes. An aristocrat, a gully dwarf, and a determined priestess all have reasons to distrust the world around them, but the series works because it keeps forcing them into the same future. From there, Heir of Kayolin and Fate of Thorbardin widen the conflict until clan pride, exile, civil war, and royal madness all become part of one larger problem.

These are very much travel-and-politics fantasy novels. There are ruins, ambushes, magic, and sieges, but the core question is how the dwarves of Krynn should live with each other after generations of division. Niles treats that seriously. Old insults matter. Gatekeeping matters. Religious authority matters. So does the fact that some people at the very bottom of the social ladder may see the truth more clearly than the nobles do.

The setting matters, too. Pax Tharkas, Kayolin, and Thorbardin are not just familiar Dragonlance names dropped for flavor. They are engines of the plot, each carrying its own memory, symbolism, and political weight.
