Dragon Wizard starts with a boy who asks too many questions, which is a good sign for the kind of fantasy this is. Evann grows up in a small village, restless and curious, until he finally runs off in search of answers. What he finds first is Rufous, a dragon who is almost as curious as he is, and that meeting sets the whole series in motion.

From there the books mix wonder with a darker rule about how this world works. Dragons can breathe fire only after consuming human blood, a fact Evann finds horrifying and Rufous does not embrace. That choice matters. Rufous is not just a friendly beast with wings. He is a dragon trying to hold onto decency inside a culture shaped by power, fear, and old habits.

In The Dragon’s Boy, that bond pulls them into dragon politics when Rufous faces his enemy Moriach at the Dragon Conclave, where a new ruler of the dragons is chosen. The series likes that shift from wonder to responsibility.

The Dragon’s Apprentice widens the world. Evann heads to the city of Morshton to learn how to control the spells he has inherited, only to hear that those same spells could burn his mind out if he handles them badly. At the same time, Rufous, now carrying leadership of his own, is pulled toward conflict with the goblins after accusations, theft, and old grudges start circling together.

Power matters here, but choice matters more.
