Series background & context

The Case of the Green-Dressed Ghost introduces Kester Lanner at the worst possible time. His mother has died, her last request sends him to find the mysterious Dr Ribero, and the answer he gets is bigger than he expected. Dr Julio Ribero turns out to be the father he never knew, and Ribero's run-down agency makes its living handling ghosts, spirits, and the kinds of problems normal people would rather pretend are not real.

Kester is the heart of the series.

He is not the cool, fearless sort of supernatural hero. He is anxious, bookish, and often badly out of his depth, which is exactly what makes him easy to root for. As he gets pulled deeper into the agency's work, he learns he has a rare gift that makes him useful in ways he never imagined. Around him is a scrappy team of investigators, including the formidable Miss Wellbeloved, all trying to do dangerous work with limited cash, clashing personalities, and very mixed levels of patience.

The setting does a lot of heavy lifting. These books move through southwest England, including old buildings, seaside towns, and places where folklore feels close enough to touch. Lyme Regis becomes especially important in The Case of the Deadly Doppelganger, but the wider series keeps returning to the same pleasures: local legends, odd histories, and landscapes that feel a little haunted even before the spirits show up.

It is spooky, but it is never joyless.

Each book has its own case, so you get satisfying paranormal mystery plots along the way. One story centers on a vicious ghost tied to an old portrait. Another follows a deadly double stalking elderly residents. Later books bring in cult activity, ancient daemons, and bigger questions about who controls contact between the human and spirit worlds.

There is also a longer arc running underneath the casework. Kester's bond with Ribero is messy from the start. His mother's past holds more secrets than he realizes. Kester grows from frightened outsider into someone forced to make difficult choices about loyalty, power, and whether spirits can ever be neatly divided into harmless and dangerous. By the time Hrschni enters the picture, the series is no longer just about solving cases. It is also about inheritance, trust, and the strange burden of learning who your family really was.

What makes the series stand out is its tone. It mixes creepy moments with warmth, banter, and the charm of a supernatural workplace that feels half chaotic family business, half underfunded detective agency. If you like paranormal mysteries with folklore, character growth, and a very human kind of courage, Dr Ribero's world is a fun one to spend time in.
