Series background & context

The Dr. Charlotte Stone series blends serial-killer suspense, paranormal romance, and FBI procedural danger. It starts with The Last Victim and follows one continuing emotional arc through four books, so this is a series where order matters.

Charlotte Stone, usually called Charlie, has built her career studying the minds of serial killers. Her interest is not casual. When she was sixteen, she survived a killer's attack that left her best friend's family dead. That trauma pushed her toward criminal pathology and made her determined to understand the kind of people most of us would rather never think about.

Charlie also sees the dead.

That gift, or curse, gives the series its paranormal hook. Spirits of people who died violently can appear to her, and those visions sometimes help her see what investigators miss. They also threaten the professional reputation she has worked hard to build. A psychiatrist and expert witness who talks to ghosts has a credibility problem, even when the ghosts are useful.

The first book brings her back to the nightmare that shaped her. FBI agent Tony Bartoli believes the Boardwalk Killer may have returned, or that a copycat is using the same pattern. Charlie's knowledge and visions make her valuable to the case, but they also pull her closer to old fear and new danger.

Then there is Michael Garland. He is a ghost, a convicted killer, and the impossible romantic complication Charlie cannot neatly explain or escape. Across the series, her connection to Michael runs beside her work with Tony and the FBI, creating a strange triangle of loyalty, attraction, doubt, and danger.

Each book raises a different case while adding to Charlie's personal story. The Last Kiss Goodbye pits her against the Gingerbread Man. Her Last Whisper takes her into a Las Vegas case involving missing women. The Last Time I Saw Her turns hard toward Michael's past, a mysterious lookalike, and a prison-break threat.

Expect darker suspense than in Robards' lighter romantic thrillers. The books deal with violent killers and victims, but the tone stays fast and readable. The draw is Charlie herself: wounded, sharp, compassionate, and often terrified, but still willing to sit across from monsters if it helps save the next person.
