Author bio
Doug Dandridge was born in Venice, Florida, in 1957 and grew up on the state's Gulf Coast. He came from a family with both Florida and French Canadian roots, and a lot of his early memories were tied to beaches, camping trips, and the kind of outdoor wandering that leaves a mark on a kid's imagination. He was also a fierce reader very early on, and he did not stay in the children's section for long.
That habit stuck.
He read classic science fiction, fantasy, horror, history, and comics, and he pulled from all of it. Writers like Heinlein, Verne, Wells, Howard, and Burroughs were part of his mental furniture, but so were old science fiction films and television. He also remembered the pull of real-world science, especially the space program, and those interests show up later in the way his books care about engineering, logistics, distance, and what technology can do to a civilization.
Before he became a full-time writer, Dandridge lived several other working lives. After high school and Marine JROTC, he served in the U.S. Army as an infantryman and later in the Florida National Guard. He studied at Florida State University, where his coursework ranged across biology, geology, physics, chemistry, and psychology before he earned a degree in psychology, and he later studied clinical psychology at the University of Alabama.
He then spent years working in demanding institutions, including psychiatric hospitals, mental health centers, a prison, a juvenile residential facility, and later the Florida Department of Children and Families. That background matters. Even when his stories stretch across galaxies or drop soldiers into magical worlds, they usually keep one eye on stress, systems, trauma, and the very practical question of how people function when the rules break down.
He did not come to publishing overnight.
Dandridge wrote on and off for years, then committed hard to independent publishing and eventually became a full-time author in March 2013. For many readers, the gateway book was Exodus: Empires at War: Book 1, which opened into a huge military science fiction sequence about exile, fleet war, imperial politics, and an old enemy returning to finish the job. He kept building that setting through books like The Rising Storm, The Rebirth, and the companion lines Exodus: Machine War and Exodus: Tales of The Empire.
But he was never only an Exodus writer. The Deep Dark Well throws an Alabama miner forty thousand years into the future and into the orbit of a black hole station. The Arrival: Book 1 opens the Refuge series with millions of modern humans dumped into a fantasy world where tanks and helicopters collide with dragons, lichs, and prophecy. Contact, the start of Kinship War, shifts back toward military science fiction but keeps the focus close through the friendship between a human and an alien raised together on a threatened colony world.
Readers who click with Dandridge usually like the same things across his catalog. The stakes are clear. The worlds are big. The military detail is there because he enjoys it, not because he wants to show off. And even in standalones like The Hunger, Afterlife, or The Monster, he tends to ask what power costs, what survival changes, and how much of a person remains once technology or violence starts pulling them apart.
In his later years he lived in Tallahassee, wrote fast, followed sports, and spoke openly about the work it took to reach readers as an independent author. He died in December 2020, leaving behind a large, energetic body of science fiction and fantasy. If you like stories that think big and move quickly, his books give you plenty to dig into.
