Series background & context

The Double-A Western Detective Agency books spin out of the world of Holmes on the Range, but they follow a different crew and a different kind of frontier trouble. Instead of the Amlingmeyer brothers, the focus shifts to fellow agency operatives Ira Hoop, Oswin Diehl, and Eskaminzim. They work for the same growing detective outfit, but their assignments put them deeper into open conflict, bigger geography, and jobs that can turn from investigation to survival in a heartbeat.

These books ride a little faster.

That change in cast gives the series a new feel. The three leads come from different backgrounds and bring different skills to the work, so the stories play more like team missions than brother-comedy mysteries. There is still plotting to untangle and still a hidden truth under the surface, but the books spend more time on pursuit, ambush, gunfire, and the ugly mechanics of money and power on the frontier.

The first book, Hired Guns, drops the team into Arizona Territory, where a ruthless tycoon wants control of a remote mine and the local owners bring in the Double-A to fight back. The second, No Hallowed Ground, starts as a chase after bank robbers moving across Missouri toward the Indian Territories and then opens into a much larger conspiracy tied to post-Civil War bitterness. In both books, the initial job grows into something broader than anyone expected.

Even with the heavier action, these are not just shoot-'em-ups. Hockensmith still likes motives, reversals, and the moment when a job that looked straightforward turns out to be full of hidden players. The detective-agency angle helps too, because it lets the books examine the West as a place where official law often fails and private operators end up filling the gap, sometimes for justice, sometimes for whoever can pay.

If you already like Holmes on the Range, this spin-off feels like a natural side road into the same world. If you are new to Hockensmith, it also works as a cleaner entry into his Western fiction because the books stand on their own. Expect more action, broader frontier politics, and a solid sense that every case is only half about the crime and half about who really benefits when the dust settles.
