Series background & context

Donovan Enterprises is a pair of early contemporary romances by Iris Johansen: Stormy Vows and Tempest at Sea. The books follow different couples, moving from the world of filmmaking to a voyage around the Gulf of Mexico. Both begin with a woman whose plans collide with a powerful man's expectations. Attraction arrives quickly, but independence, secrets, and a struggle over who controls the situation make the relationships difficult to navigate.

Each story puts a different couple in the spotlight.

In Stormy Vows, Brenna Sloan is a struggling actress facing an opportunity that could change her career. A private audition with filmmaker Michael Donovan should be about work, yet their meeting becomes intensely personal. Brenna refuses to let his forceful personality overwhelm her. Michael, meanwhile, discovers that the woman in front of him is more resilient and more vulnerable than he first assumed. A secret she is keeping complicates their growing attachment.

The filmmaking setting matters because professional opportunity and personal desire are tangled together from the start. Brenna wants a chance to move forward, but she also wants to retain the independence that Michael challenges. Their conflict depends on what each assumes about the other and what remains unspoken between them. The book's emotional tension comes from the distance between wanting someone and understanding enough about their life to build a relationship with them.

Tempest at Sea begins with a protest. Jane Smith, an idealist opposed to nuclear weapons, slips aboard Jake Dominic's yacht in Miami. She intends an act of political vandalism, but being caught changes the direction of her plans. Instead of leaving after making her point, she finds herself aboard the Sea Breeze with Jake for a voyage lasting two months. Their travels take them around the Gulf of Mexico, putting two people with very different attitudes into close company.

The yacht gives this second romance a more adventurous shape. Jane can't simply walk away from the man whose property she targeted, and Jake must deal with a woman whose convictions have already disrupted his life. Port visits, danger, and narrow escapes add outside pressure to their personal clashes. The forced closeness creates opportunities for attraction, but it also keeps the question of freedom and choice near the center of the story.

Together, the novels offer a view of Johansen's early romance writing, where strong personalities and intense feelings drive the action. There is no long mystery requiring a string of installments to resolve. Readers can move through the pair in publication order, beginning with Brenna and Michael's conflict and then following Jane and Jake at sea. The change of setting gives the second book its own identity while retaining the first book's interest in desire, resistance, and trust.
