Cyborgs: Mankind Redefined is Donna McDonald's bigger, moodier science fiction romance series, though it still keeps her usual streak of humor. The books are set in a future shaped by war, cybernetic soldiers, genetic engineering, and the ugly question of what happens when governments decide people can be remade into weapons.

The core idea is strong.

The war is over, but many cyborg soldiers do not know that. They are still trapped by programming, still treated like tools, and still denied the humanity they once had. The series begins with Dr. Kyra Winters, a scientist who helped create the conversion process and now wants to undo some of the damage. Her mission is not clean or safe. Every cyborg she tries to restore puts her in danger, and every success threatens the powers that benefited from keeping these men under control.

That setup gives the books both their romance and their moral tension. Each numbered title, Peyton 313, Kingston 691, Marcus 582, Eric 754, William 874X, Nero 1000, and Ashland 297, centers on a different cyborg or a different stage of the larger struggle. The recurring question is not only whether a couple can fall in love, but whether a person rebuilt as machinery can reclaim identity, choice, and dignity.

McDonald also pulls the series toward urban fantasy in feel. The world is post-war and futuristic, but it is not hard science fiction. It is emotional, action-heavy, and interested in the human cost of technology more than in technical explanation. Military threats, corporate secrets, hidden experiments, and the gradual awakening of the cyborgs keep the momentum moving.

Readers who come here for romance will get it, but they should also expect an ongoing rebellion story. This is one of McDonald's more connected series, and the later books hit better if you start at the beginning. The atmosphere is darker than in her lighter paranormal work, but she still refuses to let the books become joyless.

If you like futuristic romance with action, ethical mess, and heroes who have to fight their way back to being fully human, this is one of her best series.
