Ellie's determination to dig into what is happening around her gives the second book both its momentum and much of its tension.

There is romance in this series, but it is usually tangled up with risk. People fall in love, or try to hold on to love, while dealing with jealousy, memory, violence, and social judgment. Mallery also keeps one eye on the historical setting at all times, so the world feels busy with local politics, shifting loyalties, and the kind of work that makes daily life hard.

That balance is what makes the series work.

If you want a polished, light western, this may not be it. If you want a more emotional frontier story, one that gives its women grit, anger, humor, and real choices, the Dolan books are easier to sink into. Expect family drama, wounded hearts, frontier danger, and a setting that never lets the characters forget where, and when, they are.
