1

Chasing Trails

by George Mahood

2021

George agrees to his first ultramarathon and gets knee-deep mud, torrential rain and punishing coastal trails instead. This short prequel follows him and his friend Mark along the South West Coast Path, suffering beautifully almost every step.

2

Did Not Enter

by George Mahood

2021

Nearing 40, George and Rachel swap formal events for homemade adventures, including two cycling trips in France and a 40-mile run along Britain's oldest road. A hangover marathon, yoga and a new dog keep things gloriously off-balance.

3

Did Not Finish

by George Mahood

2021

George and Rachel test their marriage with a marathon, a triathlon and a bid for a 10km swim, all while juggling family life in Devon. It is funny, scrappy and full of the kind of training advice you probably should not follow.

4

Did Not Happen

by George Mahood

2021

George and Rachel begin 2020 by running every street in their town and tackling a famously muddy race. Then lockdown arrives, and Mahood finds humor in shortages, homeschooling, home haircuts and the challenge of making adventure close to home.

5

Did Not Sink

by George Mahood

2021

Chasing a gold swim hat, George returns to the Dart 10k and learns he has to do it twice. Add foul weather, another Dartmoor Classic and a bruising first mountain-bike trip, and comfort is nowhere in sight.

6

Did Not Start

by George Mahood

2021

Rachel tackles a brutal 110-mile cycling sportive and, to George's alarm, becomes the better runner. Family trips, wild weather and an ultramarathon push the pair further than either of them planned.

7

Did Not Try

by George Mahood

2021

After one rash signup, George enters Rachel into a half-Ironman without asking. Training trips to Barcelona, Cornwall and the Cotswolds bring more bike trouble, swim nerves and marital tension in this lively follow-up.

Series background & context

The DNF books are George Mahood's funny, very unglamorous records of trying to get fitter while also staying married, raising a family, and not taking himself too seriously. These are endurance-sport memoirs, but not in the polished, elite-athlete sense. George is much more interested in what happens when ordinary people sign up for extraordinary distances and then discover, usually too late, what that decision actually means.

George is at the centre of the series, but Rachel is just as important. At first she is often the long-suffering wife who gets dragged into races and training plans she did not exactly request. One of the pleasures of the series is watching that balance shift. Rachel becomes a stronger runner, cyclist and swimmer, and more than once George is the one struggling to keep up.

The races are only half the story.

The books move through Devon, across other parts of Britain, and out into trips to places like France and Spain. Setting matters here. Mahood pays attention to cold water, ugly hills, muddy trails, brutal weather, strange roadside stops, cramped campsites, and the little practical problems that glossy sports writing usually skips. A 10k swim, a half-Ironman, a savage cycling sportive or a long trail run all feel different when the training has been squeezed between family life and the forecast looks terrible.

There is a loose arc running through the series. Early books build from marathon nerves and triathlon chaos into bigger endurance challenges, while later entries branch out into European cycling trips, milestone runs and self-made adventures that do not depend on a starting gun. Even Did Not Happen, set against the upheaval of 2020, keeps the same spirit alive by finding movement and mischief in local streets, muddy races, walking holidays and daily family life turned upside down.

Failure is part of the point.

That is what makes the DNF title work so well. These books are not really about personal bests or sporting glory. They are about doubt, embarrassment, bad planning, sore legs, awkward meals, minor injuries, weather that refuses to cooperate, and the way a ridiculous challenge can become a family story worth retelling. If you want extra backstory, Operation Ironman and the short Chasing Trails sit nearby and help explain how George ended up in this world. But the main series stands on its own as a warm, funny account of two very normal people repeatedly asking how hard can it be, and then getting a very full answer.
