Series background & context
The Distant series follows one Irish family as they are pushed out of their homeland by famine and drawn into the harsh promise of colonial Australia. It begins in the west of Ireland in 1851, when the potato blight has turned fields to mud and hope is in short supply.
In A Distant Horizon Ellen Kittrick is doing everything she can to keep her family alive. With crops failing and rent unpaid, she breaks convention by working for an English landowner, Rafe Hamilton, and faces censure from neighbours as well as tension at home. The famine is not just a backdrop, it is a daily pressure that forces painful choices about loyalty, survival and the cost of pride.
Ellen eventually decides that the only way forward is away from Ireland. The journey by sea is risky, the new land unknown, and the family is divided over whether to stay or go. Australia offers food, space and the chance to build something of their own, but it also demands hard physical work and a willingness to start again at the bottom.
In Beyond the Distant Hills the story shifts to New South Wales in the early 1850s. Ellen and her family are settled near the colonial town of Berrima, turning rough ground into a working estate. On the surface they have made it, yet danger still creeps in from the past. A man who once threatened Ellen returns, putting her sons at risk and shaking the fragile safety she has carved out. Her marriage, built more on security than on love, begins to crack under the strain.
Rafe Hamilton is still part of Ellen’s life, though they are separated by vows, distance and guilt. The second book digs into what it means to live with the consequences of earlier decisions. Colonial society is narrow and quick to judge, and Ellen must balance her children’s future against the tug of her own heart.
The Distant Legacy moves the focus to Ellen’s eldest daughter, Bridget, in the 1860s. The family estate is now established but far from safe. Land disputes, jealous neighbours and the shadow of old feuds hang over the property. Bridget is left in charge when her parents travel, eager to prove herself but also aware that a young woman running a large holding draws attention.
Her clash with a vicious neighbour and a terrifying encounter with bushrangers pull the series into the wilder side of colonial life. Questions of class, justice and forgiveness run through Bridget’s story, echoing her mother’s struggles but in a harsher, more lawless setting.
Across all three books the Distant series offers a wide view of mid nineteenth century life. Readers spend time in famine stricken Mayo, on crowded emigrant ships and under the fierce Australian sun. The constant thread is one family’s refusal to give up, even when land, love and safety seem to be slipping away.
