Author bio
AnneMarie Brear was born in a small town in New South Wales, Australia, to English parents who had grown up in Yorkshire. The mix of Australian landscape and Yorkshire stories would quietly shape almost everything she went on to write.
As a child she read constantly. Enid Blyton came first, then horse stories like Black Beauty, and eventually the Australian classic The Silver Brumby, which stayed with her for years. Books were easy to find because her mother ran a bookshop, so there was always something new to take home.
In the 1980s she lived in England, and that time left a mark. Wandering through old country estates and big, draughty houses, she found herself wondering about the families who had passed through those rooms. Later visits to castles, villages and churches, plus a growing interest in genealogy, fed into the backgrounds, names and settings of her fiction.
She started writing seriously in 1997 when her children were small. At first she knew very little about publishing. She posted printed chapters to overseas agents, waited months for replies and spent more than she could really afford on postage. When the internet finally reached her house, writer forums and critique groups opened up a new world and helped her learn the trade.
Her first novel was published in 2006. Since then she has written dozens of historical family sagas, novellas and a handful of contemporary romances, sometimes also using the name Anne Whitfield. Many of her stories are set in Yorkshire or Australia between Victorian times and the Second World War, following women who fall down the social ladder, cross oceans, or quietly hold families together while history moves around them.
Readers often meet miners’ daughters, servants, nurses and widows in her books, women who work in tobacco shops and slum kitchens, on remote sheep stations or on the banks of the River Calder. Novels like The Slum Angel, The Market Stall Girl, A Distant Horizon and The Orphan in the Peacock Shawl show her fondness for characters who fight hard for security, love and a place to belong.
Awards have come along the way, including international recognition for The Slum Angel and prize listings for books such as The Tobacconist’s Wife, The Market Stall Girl and A Distant Horizon. For her, though, the real measure of success is still the email from a reader who stayed up too late because they needed to know how a story ended.
Today she lives in the Southern Highlands of New South Wales. When she is not drafting a new chapter or digging into old records for research, she enjoys reading, travelling, watching movies, spending time with her family and, whenever possible, finding a quiet corner with chocolate and a notebook.
