He has to negotiate, investigate, improvise, and survive while the rules keep changing around him. That creates two kinds of tension at once. You get the immediate rush of action, but you also get the slower pull of a character trying to understand who is manipulating events and why he matters to them.

In tone, Disavowed is leaner and more openly action-driven than Shah's historical thrillers, but it still likes twists, buried motives, and uneasy alliances. The series is best read in order, starting with Project Icarus and moving to The Fallen, because Ethan's role and the wider Daedalus conflict build together.
