Disaster Zone Books in Order

Disaster Zone is an early David Levithan series, and it has a different feel from the books that later made him famous. This is middle grade adventure with a supernatural edge, built around natural disasters, urgency, and a brother pair trying to stay one step ahead of catastrophe.

The central character is Stieg Atwood, who has an uncanny ability to sense when and where disaster is about to strike. That gift is not abstract or decorative. It puts him and his brother Adam right in the path of danger, because once you know something terrible is coming, doing nothing is not really an option.

The first books use that premise in very direct ways. In the Eye of the Tornado throws the brothers into storm danger, and In the Heart of the Quake pushes the same setup toward earthquake territory. The pleasure of the series is in the pace. The books move quickly, the stakes are clear, and the disasters are treated as real physical threats rather than just background spectacle.

There is also a family shadow over the series. Stieg and Adam are not dealing with danger in a vacuum, and part of what gives the books their shape is the way loss and responsibility sit behind the action. Even with all the suspense, the emotional core is often about loyalty, trust, and the burden of knowing more than other people do.

If you know Levithan mostly from queer contemporary YA, this series may surprise you. It is much more plot-driven and younger in tone. But it is also easy to see some early Levithan instincts here, especially his interest in relationships under pressure and the way unusual premises can reveal character fast.

Start with In the Eye of the Tornado and read forward from there. These are short, fast books, best for readers who want sibling teamwork, weather-and-earth danger, and a premise that gets moving almost immediately.
