This corner of David Levithan’s work starts with a great premise and then gets messier in the best way. In Will Grayson, Will Grayson, two teenagers with the same name cross paths one cold night in Chicago, and from there their lives begin to bend in directions neither of them expected.

The trick is that the shared name is only the starting point. The two Wills are very different people, with different problems, different emotional habits, and different ways of moving through the world. One is trying to avoid drama and keep things manageable. The other is lonelier, angrier, and dealing with depression in a much more isolated way. Their stories run alongside each other until they collide.

The other huge force in the book is Tiny Cooper, the gigantic, theatrical, impossible-to-ignore friend whose personality pulls half the plot with it. Tiny gives the novel much of its comedy, but he is not just comic relief. He is also the reason the book can leap from private hurt to public chaos, especially once the high school musical enters the picture.

That musical later gets its own companion volume, Hold Me Closer. This is not a conventional sequel. It is the full version of Tiny’s over-the-top show, which means readers get songs, jokes, heartbreak, and a lot of exaggerated self-mythologizing. If you liked Tiny in the novel, the companion book makes perfect sense. If you did not, it will definitely not change your mind.

What ties these books together is a blend of humor and sincerity. The story can be silly, loud, and packed with quotable dialogue, but it is also interested in friendship, mental health, queer identity, and the ways teenagers invent versions of themselves to survive.
