Author bio
Diane Saxon was born in Lincoln, but she did not grow up in one place. Her father served in the RAF, and her childhood included time in Zambia and Germany as well as England. That mix of movement, freedom, and watchfulness seems to have stayed with her, and it fits the alert, uneasy mood that runs through many of her books.
She was a big reader long before she was a published writer. As a teenager she read romance and thrillers side by side, moving from her mother's romance novels to the harder-edged books her father and older sister loved. That wide reading helps explain why her own work moves so easily between love stories, police procedurals, paranormal romance, and dark family thrillers.
Her first instinct as a writer was actually to go dark. Then life swerved.
After a foot operation left her stuck at home for two weeks, she found she did not want to read or write anything bleak, so she wrote a romance instead. That opened the door. She went on to publish twelve romances for the U.S. market, including books in the Atlantic Divide world and shorter titles such as For Heaven’s Cakes and Short Circuit Time.
Later, the thriller in her head would not leave her alone.
That shift led to the DS Jenna Morgan books, beginning with Find Her Alive / The Keeper, and then to a run of standalones that lean hard into missing people, old guilt, hidden family ties, and the damage left by buried crimes. Books such as My Little Brother, My Sister’s Secret, The Good Twin, My Mother’s Lies, The Quiet Wife, and A Stranger in the Family all show what she likes to do best, take ordinary people, place them under pressure, and keep tightening the screw.
She still brings a romance writer's interest in people to her thrillers, and that matters. Even in her darkest books, the emotional stakes sit right alongside the mystery. Sisters, mothers, daughters, scarred outsiders, and people carrying shame for years turn up again and again. In the Atlantic Divide romances, the same interest appears in a lighter form, with sheriffs, soldiers, doctors, scientists, and stubborn lovers trying to work out whether trust is worth the risk.
Some stories come to her on long woodland walks near Ironbridge Gorge. Others arrive in that half-awake 3 a.m. state that sends a writer downstairs to get the scene on the page before it disappears.
She is also a serious researcher. She has spoken about taking an online forensics course to better understand investigative detail, and she checks the practical side of police work carefully. That mix of character focus and procedural curiosity gives the Jenna Morgan novels, in particular, their shape.
Now Saxon lives in the Shropshire countryside with her husband, their family close around them, and a lively collection of animals that has included dogs, cats, and chickens. She was longlisted for the CWA Dagger in the Library in 2024. Whether she is writing romance, paranormal fiction, or psychological suspense, her books tend to circle the same question, what happens when the past refuses to stay buried?
