He is seconded to help establish a major-crimes task force in Ontario, then finds himself handling the murder of a local shopkeeper after a Canada Day gathering. The new setting gives the series a change of pace, but Gibson brings his own baggage with him. His private life is unsettled, and the demands of the case make it harder to keep those worries separate from the job.

The places matter because the books move through campuses, piers, beaches, homes, and workplaces. The investigations unfold through the connections and resentments that form in those settings, rather than using the scenery as simple decoration.

The third book, Murder on the Saanich Peninsular, returns Gibson and Scottie to Vancouver Island after a woman is killed near a fishing pier. Gibson quickly suspects the woman's abusive husband, while Scottie pushes him to look harder at what the evidence actually proves. A missing young man, conflicting family accounts, and fractures within the team make the case more complicated. Meanwhile, Gibson is dealing with major changes in his family life, so the professional and personal storylines continue to overlap.

These are police procedurals with a steady, character-focused pace. Each book has its own murder and can be followed on its own, but reading in order gives the best sense of Gibson's changing relationships, his partnership with Scottie, and the consequences that carry forward.
