By the later books, Askew is even willing to let stranger, more uncanny elements brush against the procedural frame, which keeps the series feeling alive rather than formulaic.

What makes these novels stick is their moral pressure. Birch is constantly forced to choose between clean rules and messy human reality, and the books do not pretend those choices are easy. These are dark stories, especially when dealing with public trauma and violence against women, but they are not interested in shock for its own sake. Askew's background as a poet shows up in the atmosphere and close observation, while the writing stays clear, readable, and firmly grounded in character.
