DI David Vogel Books in Order

The DI David Vogel novels are British police procedurals set largely in the West Country. Vogel works for Avon and Somerset police, and the cases take him from Bristol streets to quiet coastal villages, country houses, and small communities where everybody seems to know everybody else's business.

The series begins with Deadly Dance. In Wheel of Fire, a fatal blaze at a Somerset manor brings international financial trouble into a rural setting. Dreams of Fear starts with the apparent suicide of a young mother in the seaside village of Instow, but Vogel finds reasons to doubt the first explanation. Each book gives him a different kind of puzzle, while keeping the focus on patient police work and the ways families can hide difficult truths.

Nothing is quite as simple as it first looks.

The Danger Within returns Vogel to North Devon, where a man is found stabbed in his home beside his shocked wife. What appears to be a domestic killing opens into a case with buried history and unexpected connections. In The Deadliest Legacy, an author festival in Appledore is disrupted by a sudden death and further threats, leaving Vogel to sort through a crowded cast of visitors, locals, and possible motives.

These are character-led mysteries with a steady, investigative pace rather than nonstop action. Bonner gives the settings real weight, from local institutions and village relationships to the pressure of a crime landing in a place that expects peace and privacy.

Vogel is the constant presence. He listens, tests assumptions, and keeps digging when the obvious answer feels too neat.

The cases are complete stories, so a newcomer can pick up an individual title. Still, reading from Deadly Dance onward is the best way to follow Vogel and his colleagues as the series develops. Readers who enjoy grounded British crime, family secrets, and cases that unfold layer by layer should feel at home here.
