DF Bailey Books in Order

D.F. Bailey is the pen name of Don Bailey, a Canadian writer whose crime and psychological thrillers often put ordinary people under intense pressure. He was born in Montreal, then grew up in a family that kept moving. His early years took him from rural Ontario to New York City, Mississippi, and New Jersey, giving him a wide range of places and people to draw on later.

He eventually settled on Vancouver Island, in Victoria, British Columbia, near the Salish Sea. It became both his home and the setting for The Good Lie, one of his earlier psychological thrillers.

Before writing full-time, Bailey spent twenty-two years at the University of Victoria. He taught creative writing and journalism, helped establish the Professional Writing Cooperative Education Program, and also worked as a freelance business writer and journalist. Those jobs gave him a close look at how stories are reported, shaped, and sometimes buried.

In 2010, he left the university to make writing his main work.

Bailey's earlier novels include Healing the Dead, Fire Eyes, The Good Lie, and Exit from America. Fire Eyes, a psychological thriller shaped in part by his time working in a child psychiatric hospital, was a finalist for the W.H. Smith First Novel Award. Healing the Dead was later translated into German, while The Good Lie was recorded as an audiobook.

His books tend to focus on people trying to make sense of danger, grief, deception, or a past they cannot quite leave behind. The stakes can be political or personal, but the pressure usually lands on a small group of characters forced to make difficult calls. Exit from America, for example, follows people trying to hold together as social and environmental breakdown overtakes San Francisco.

A different strand of his work began with the Will Finch novels. Bone Maker, Stone Eater, and Lone Hunter introduced Finch, a San Francisco crime reporter recovering from a devastating loss. The books mix investigation, financial crime, political power, and the messy work of following a lead when powerful people want it dropped.

Then the world around Finch got bigger.

Later novels such as Second Life, Open Chains, Run Time, and White Sphere bring Finch and private investigator Eve Noon into new cases involving old violence, conspiracies, public corruption, and threats that reach well beyond one city. Five Knives looks back to Finch's early days, when he is still finding his footing as a reporter.

Bailey has said he finally landed on his feet in Victoria after all those moves. His fiction still travels, from San Francisco streets and Oregon wilderness to Washington, Iraq, and beyond, but it keeps returning to one basic question: who keeps asking questions when telling the truth becomes dangerous?
