Series background & context

The Devils Desk series takes the Talbot clan away from ruined suburbs and military bases and drops them into the wilds of Alaska. It’s billed as a vacation, which practically guarantees disaster in the Tufoverse.

The first book, Devils Desk, sends Michael Talbot, his family, and the Tyne family to Katmai National Park. The area is remote, stunning, and dominated by the looming presence of the volcanic peak called Devils Desk. The cabins are comfortable, the scenery is postcard‑perfect, and the other guests seem a little off in the way Talbot fans will recognize.

It doesn’t stay idyllic for long. A catastrophic event rocks the region, ripping open the ground and unleashing a new breed of predators. These are not zombies, not quite, but they’re every bit as relentless – creatures adapted to hunt in deep forests, jagged ravines, and brutal weather.

Cut off from the outside world by storms, broken communications, and the sheer distance from civilization, the group is forced to treat the park like a war zone. Familiar dynamics play out in a fresh setting: Mike trying to keep everyone alive with a mix of instinct and sarcasm, family members pushing back against his decisions, and strangers revealing whether they’re allies, liabilities, or threats.

Later books, like Devils Desk 2 and Devil’s Desk 3, widen the scope of the disaster. What began as a localized nightmare starts to look like part of a larger pattern, tying into the magical and cosmic troubles brewing elsewhere in the Michael Talbot Adventures. Old friends and enemies from earlier series make appearances, and the consequences of what happens in Alaska ripple outward.

The tone blends survival horror with wilderness adventure. Instead of crumbling cities and highways choked with abandoned cars, you get avalanche‑prone slopes, endless snowfields, and forests where visibility can drop to nothing in a heartbeat. There’s nowhere to run except deeper into the cold.

If you like the idea of Talbot‑style chaos in a setting where nature is as dangerous as any monster, Devils Desk delivers that mix in spades.
