Winter's Rising

by Mark Tufo

2014

All Winter has ever known is The War and the walls of Dystance. When she uncovers relics of the old world, she begins to dream of life beyond the Pickets, dragging best friend Cedar and forbidden love Tallow into dangerous rebellion.

Series background & context

Dystance steps away from zombies and aliens to explore a different kind of nightmare: a society built entirely around endless war. It’s aimed at teen and adult readers who like bleak futures, rebellion from the inside, and a touch of first love.

From birth, the citizens of Dystance are taught that The War is everything. School, work, and even family life are geared toward feeding the war machine. Children grow up behind walls called Pickets, trained to believe that fighting and dying are the highest callings they can hope for.

Winter’s Rising introduces Winter, a girl who doesn’t buy the story she’s been handed. She stumbles across hidden scraps of the old world – relics from before The War – and realizes that life used to be about more than marching and hunger. With her best friend Cedar and a boy named Tallow she isn’t supposed to love, Winter starts to imagine escape.

Her small acts of defiance snowball into something larger. Questions that were once only whispered become plans, and plans become action. The book balances training drills, harsh punishments, and the grinding routines of a militarized youth with flashes of joy and the fragile hope that there might be something better beyond the fence.

In Cedar’s Conflict, the viewpoint widens. Cedar is forced to confront what rebellion really means when it stops being an idea and starts costing lives. Friendships are tested as the group learns that enemies aren’t always faceless soldiers on the other side of the battlefield; sometimes they’re neighbors, teachers, or even family who’ve accepted the system as the only way to survive.

The Edge of Deceit drives toward open confrontation. Secrets about who started The War and who truly benefits from it begin to surface. Winter, Cedar, Tallow, and their allies are pushed into roles they never wanted – symbols of a resistance that might free their people or get them all wiped out. The title hints at the lies they have to navigate, from official propaganda to the half‑truths rebels tell themselves to sleep at night.

Throughout the series, Tufo keeps the pacing quick and the focus tight on the small circle of teens at the center. It’s a story about loyalty, indoctrination, and what it takes to imagine a future your world keeps saying you don’t deserve.
