The Red Wyvern

by Katharine Kerr

1997

Series background & context

The Dragon Mage act bridges the war torn past of Deverry with the dragon haunted present, pulling threads from earlier books into a tighter, more emotionally charged pattern. These novels move back and forth between the Time of Troubles, when the true king fought to claim his throne, and later centuries in which old curses still echo.

The Red Wyvern spends much of its time in the year 849, when the kingdom is split by civil war. Lillorigga, called Lilli, is the daughter of the rebel Boar clan. Her mother Merodda is a ruthless dweomer worker who forces Lilli to scry for her, using the girl's talent to spy and scheme. When Merodda's intrigues turn murderous, some of the Boar's allies defect to Prince Maryn, the rightful king, taking Lilli with them and setting up a confrontation between the girl's divided loyalties.

In that same past, Nevyn works behind the scenes to steer events toward a resolution that will break Merodda's influence without destroying Lilli. Secret passages, betrayals at city gates, and the fall of mighty fortresses give the book a strongly historical, almost siege novel rhythm. At the same time, readers see how the souls involved in these events will return as different people centuries later.

The later timelines, developed more fully in The Black Raven and The Fire Dragon, follow those reborn souls in the city of Cerr Cawnen and in the northern lands beyond Cengarn. Niffa, a young widow, and Raena, a sorceress tied to the cult of the false goddess Alshandra, reenact patterns first set in motion by Lilli and Merodda. Rhodry, transformed by his bond with the dragon Arzosah, and the elven enchantress Dallandra are drawn into conflicts where astral and physical wars overlap.

Across these books dragons move from being distant legends to active forces. Arzosah in particular is less a beast than a person with her own history and grudges, and her relationship with Rhodry is central to the way battles unfold. The title "Dragon Mage" points as much to the complex use of dweomer in cooperation with dragons as to any single character.

Stylistically, the act leans into Kerr's strength for weaving multiple lifetimes into one coherent tragedy. Readers watch the consequences of betrayal, obsession, and misplaced loyalty ripple across incarnations, but they also see characters make different choices the second or third time around. The contrast between war in the distant past and looming threats in the present gives the narrative a strong sense of fate tightening.

Dragon Mage is best read after the Westlands books, since it builds directly on the siege of Cengarn and the rise of Alshandra. It also lays key groundwork for the Silver Wyrm act, in which the wars with the Horsekin and their fanatical goddess finally reach a decisive end.
