Soon he is joined, and often unsettled, by Molly Blom. She is not a standard police partner. Molly has a background as an infiltrator for the security services, which means she knows how to disappear, bluff, lie, and survive. Together they make an uneasy pair: Sam is intuitive, obsessive, and increasingly unstable under pressure, while Molly is harder to read and usually a few steps ahead.

Trust is the rarest thing in these books.

One of the pleasures of the series is how it keeps moving the ground under its own characters. The cases do involve kidnappings, killings, and hidden networks, but the bigger engine is the way each investigation circles back to Sam and Molly themselves. Old cases refuse to stay buried. Personal histories leak into professional work. By Hunted and You Are Next, the two are no longer working inside normal police structures at all, and that shift gives the books a hunted, off-balance energy.

The setting matters. Stockholm is important, but so are the snowy north, lonely cabins, and the archipelago, places where people can hide, vanish, or be cut off from help. Dahl uses those landscapes well. They are not just scenery. They make the books feel colder, quieter, and more claustrophobic.

If you come to this series expecting a neat case-of-the-week rhythm, that is not really the game. These novels build one long pressure system, with cliff edges between books and a growing sense that someone is always watching, steering, or waiting. The tone is dark, fast, and uneasy, but it never loses sight of character. At heart, these are thrillers about damaged investigators trying to decide who they can believe, and whether the law still has room for them once they stop playing by its rules.
