Those premises show what the series does well, it uses the apparent calm of the countryside as cover for crimes that are messy, cruel, and deeply human.

Mark also works well because he is not carrying the books alone.

His working relationship with DC Jan West becomes an important anchor, and the team dynamic helps the series feel lived in. The investigations still move quickly, but there is room for the friction, trust, and day to day work that make a police series stick. Compared with the Kay Hunter books, the Mark Turpin novels have a slightly different flavor. They are still fast and readable, but often a touch more rooted in local history, community pressure, and the way small places remember things.

If you like male-led police procedurals, strong rural settings, and murder cases that grow darker the deeper they go, this series is a good place to settle in. Start with None the Wiser and read forward if you can, because Mark's place in the Vale becomes more convincing with each book. The pleasure here is not just in solving the case. It is in watching a detective find his footing in a landscape that never gives up the truth easily.
